Adventure #1
My first adventure started on a Thursday. It was my first time driving on a highway alone without any supervision. I was driving on highway 17 to Santa Cruz to visit some relatives. I had only been on a highway once prior to this journey, and it was for 12 minutes tops. I was a little nervous, knowing I would have to be dealing with people merging and changing lanes, but I was confident that nothing bad would happen. Everything was going fine until I got behind an old ford 4x4 with some less than safe features; the truck did not have the door to its flat bed, the paint was a faded orange that was chipping all over, the tires were a year past their prime, and its exhaust smelled just as bad as the truck looked. But all this paled in comparison to the fact that the owner of this vehicle used some cheap bungee cords to keep his assorted junk from flying out the back, All except for an empty case of beer that is. The empty piece of cardboard came over the top of the cords and, fortunately, quickly flew underneath my SUV, where it was flattened by my tires and was unable to hurt any body. I enjoyed visiting my family in Santa Cruz and hearing their stories. But if there is one thing I learned from this journey, is to never get stuck behind an old Ford.
