On Saturday, my dad, my brother, and I
went down to North Fork, California, which is approximately east of San Jose,
in order to participate in the Grizzly Century bike ride. North Fork is in Madera County, near the
geographic center of California. We woke
up at four in the morning to drive over, and we arrived at seven o’clock. When we got there, we registered for the 100
kilometer (about 62 mile) ride and then ate a pancake breakfast. The ride took about 4 hours and 20 minutes,
and we got free lunch. There was a few
rest stops throughout the ride, but we only stopped at one of them for some
snacks and refreshments. The ride
started at 2200 feet elevation, and the highest point of the ride was around
5500 feet. The ride had about 5000 feet
of total elevation gain, but since it was an out and back, all the hills that
we climbed up we descended as well. At a
few spots during the ride, there were lookout points where we were able to take
awesome pictures, since the views from high up were very impressive. At some spots we could see mountains and
giant granite boulders with peaks that were above the tree line. The ride was fun and was a good way to spend
the first half of my Saturday.
