I had never run the
Milpitas trails by myself, I was always with a horse or another person. Going
by myself allowed me to go wherever I wished because I didn’t have limitations
created by where my friends wanted to go or where a horse wasn’t allowed to go.
The first mile or so to even get to Ed Levin Park is just steep dusty hills, so
I always walked those. The miles after that are more rolling hills. Running
those trails alone made me realize how much motivation is lost when you’re not
with another person. A plus to running alone was I didn’t have to keep stopping
to encourage a horse to trot or turn around to tell him to back off. The trails
were especially nice that day because no one was on them, so there was no shame
in walking the steep dusty hills. I also got to get close to the lake/pond in
Ed Levine because I didn’t have a horse. I haven’t seen this pond in over a
year. The drought was extremely evident to me once I saw this once pretty blue
body of water. It was so shallow, people were standing in the middle looking at
the white crust that covered the bottom of the pond. It was quite shocking.
